Sgt Charles S. Chovanec attended Allegheny High School for four years and was employed by the Oliver Iron and Steel Company before he enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 16 February 1943. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

Three of his brothers also served: Earnest, Louis and Joseph.
