Pfc Werner T. Kernal he was an honory student at Paterson Eastside High School, from which he graduated at the age of seventeen. For a year he was a student in aeronautical engineering at the Glendale Aeronautical College, California and was employed in the lay-off department of the Wright Aeronautical Corporation in Paterson before he enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 28 July 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his chest.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.
