Pvt Norman E. Gundersen attended high school for two years and was a sales clerk before he enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts on 15 April 1941.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his neck.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
