Pvt James E. Hiltz attended high school for three years and had been employed in the Kendall Mills Plant in Griswoldville before he enlisted in Springfield, Massachusetts on 21 May 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
