Pfc Charles A. Bender attended high school for four years and worked on a farm before he enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland on 22 February 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his chest.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
