Pvt Orval C. Atkinson worked on the family farm before he enlisted at Fort Hayes, Ohio on 18 April 1942.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his stomach and chest.

He is remembered at the IOOF Cemetery in Saint Marys, Pleasants County, West Virginia.
