Pfc Clifford E. Whatley was a former employee of the Thomaston Cotton Mills before he enlisted at Fort McPherson, Georgia on 29 January 1942. He was sent overseas in August 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
