Pvt William Garton attended high school for two years and was employed at the Cunel Press before he enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 16 February 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his chest.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.
