Pvt Herman A. Burns attended high school for four years and was a machinist apprentice employed by Hardinge Bros Elemia Co.

He enlisted in Binghamton, New York on 28 December 1943.

He was reported severely wounded in action by small arms fire in the abdomen. The exact date and location is not known.
