Pvt John M. Writer attended Havertown High School and was a musician.

He was employed at the Pennsylvania Golf Club before he enlisted in Philadelphia on 9 March 1943.

On 4 September 1943 he was sent overseas and in August 1944 he was wounded in action by artillery shell fragments at his lips.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He is remembered on a monument in Rupt-sur-Moselle.
