Pfc John W. Gill attended high school for four years and was a sales clerk employed by the Koppers Coal Company Store, before he enlisted in Clarksburg, West Virginia on 8 May 1943.

He was killed by small arms fire in the side of his body.

He is also remembered at a monument in Rupt-sur-Moselle.
