Pvt Herbert B. Ward attended high school for four years and was a carpenter.

He enlisted in Richmond, Virginia on 26 April 1943.

In March 1944, he was wounded in action by artillery shell fragments to his shoulder.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments to the thigh.
