Cpl Howard J. Hoffman was employed by the West View Bowling Alley when he enlisted on 16 February 1942.

According to his hospital admission card he died of wounds, caused by small arms fire in October 1944. Also a newspaper article in The Pittsburgh Press of 26 October 1944 announced that relatives were informed of his death on 3 October 1944. It is therefore not clear why his date of death was officially recorded on 3 October 1945.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in St. Juan, France.
