Pfc Thomas J. Murphy graduated from Needham High School and the Bentley School of Accounting. He was a border control officer, employed by the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service.

He was stationed at the Border Patrol Station in Houlton, Maine before he enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts on 19 November 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his leg.

His brother, 1st Lt Leonard Murphy, is memorialized at Netherlands American Cemetery.
