Pfc Joseph J. Stepping attended high school for four years and was a messenger boy, employed by the Kaufmaan Department Store, before he enlisted on 19 August 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He went overseas in January 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in the leg and back.
