Pfc Mathias J. Swank was employed by the U.S. Gauge in Sellersville before he enlisted on 29 September 1943.

Just before his enlistment he was married to Elizabeth Klinger.

He had his basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina and at Fort Meade, Maryland before he was sent overseas early 1944.

On 24 May 1944 he was wounded on the right temple and spent about a week in the army hospital in Italy. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.

He was killed by small arms fire.

He is remembered at a monument in Rupt-sur-Moselle.

His brother, Zebley T. Swank, died in an accident on 22 November 1918 in France, as a member of the 52nd Pioneer Infantry Regiment and is buried at the Meuse Argonne American Cemetery.
