1st Lt Charles J. Kuhlmann Jr. graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School and attended Johns Hopkins University for two years.

He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Baltimore City, Maryland and entered the Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning. Three months later he was commissioned.

He was sent to Italy in March 1944.
