Pvt Paul A. Smith was an electrotyper before he joined the Regular Army on 17 November 1939.

He was serving as a Staff Sergeant during the period his unit was fighting in Italy. Several fatigued troops in his squad found a wine cellar and compromised their sobriety. All were put on report and Pvt Smith was demoted.

In September 1943, in Italy, he was hospitalized for an artillery shell fragment wound in his leg. Discharged from the hospital in November, he returned to his company.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.
