Pvt John A. Kovalcik attended high school for three years and was a shipping clerk, before he enlisted in Detroit, Michigan on 26 September 1941.

In November 1943, he was hospitalized for wounds at his leg caused by an artillery shell burst.

In May 1944, he was wounded in action by artillery shell fragments in his back.
