S/Sgt Wyatt H. Smith attended Lenoir High School and was a routeman, employed by the Lenoir Chair Company, before he enlisted at Camp Croft, South Carolina on 31 October 1942.

S/Sgt Smith was burned all over his body by white phosphorus.
