Pvt John De Vries was a warehouse foreman, employed by the Clarage Flour Company, before he enlisted at Fort Sheridan, Illinois on 11 February 1944. He was sent overseas to England on 26 September 1944. After two or three weeks in England, he was sent to his unit in France.

He was killed in action after having been captured by a German patrol while on a wire repairing detail. He tried to escape from his captors and was killed by them.
