Cpl Homer A. M. Oliver worked on the family farm before he joined the U.S. Army Reserve at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on 22 August 1941.

His brother, Pvt John C. Oliver, killed in the South Pacific, is listed on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
